Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Coupled human-natural systems in agricultural systems in developing countries

Description
This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious researcher to join a dynamic interdisciplinary team and carry out innovative research at the cross-section of resource governance, agricultural management, and entomology.

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with training in international development, resource economics, quantitative human geography, or related fields. The Fellow will develop an innovative research program as part of an interdisciplinary team examining the underpinnings and management of migratory locust outbreaks. This will begin with developing and leading household- and village-level data collection in target communities in Senegal in the summer of 2019 as part of the USAID OFDA project “Monitoring and Soil Amendments for Locust Management: A Pilot Project in the Kaffrine Region of Senegal.” The candidate is expected to build from this and previous experience to develop an innovative and independent research program as part of this team. The successful candidate will work within Dr. Brian Robinson group and be based at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, with additional mentorship, collaboration, and linkages to Dr. Arianne Cease’s research group (biology and sustainability) and the Global Locust Initiative, Arizona State University). Potential research foci include topics such as farm-level resource allocation decisions, the distributional impacts of locusts on vulnerable communities, spatial (remote sensing Landsat, MODIS, LIDAR, drone) analysis of locust impacts, among others. The Fellow will provide social science expertise in an interdisciplinary team that includes biologists, economists, geographers, and practitioners.

Qualifications
Candidates must have a PhD in international development, public policy,  geography, agricultural and resource economics, or related field, including those with robust quantitative training in an interdisciplinary degree program. Experience developing, overseeing, and analyzing field-based survey data is essential. Prior field work in West Africa and proficiency in French is desirable.
